Starting on my thesis project is something I thought about for a while, since starting in the M.A program of English Writing. I knew the day would come as long as I advanced in my classes, but I could not truly feel what would be like. Now that this day is here, I feel not only a bit stressed by the idea of working on such an important project, but also confused on how to start it. I do have to say that I have already come up with a very broad and unspecific idea of what I want my project to be, but the next step is surely to put this puzzle together into a project that is not only important to me, but also reflective my of studies as a member of the program.
To start off, as of right now, the ideas that I have for my project are all based around [1] the writing of a creative fictional work and crafting of a book, which will be representative of my interest for creative writing as part of my Master’s program. Alongside this book, I am thinking of having [2] an academic and literary research piece, which will probably talk about not only why this type of writing is important to me (as a practice), but also touch on the functionality of the methodology used within it. I guess, as of now, the purpose of my project is to show and somewhat prove the important of such type of writing in the literary world and how the techniques involved and used in it are not only useful for most areas in our lives (work, personal daily tasks, ect…), but also essential to our way of learning. Although I am yet to know what my writing will be about, I do have in mind the idea of making it on a story of creative fiction or creative nonfiction. The genres selected would either be on Young Adult fiction or on real life events. But regardless of which ever one I end up choosing, I do want it to involve the CREATIVE ASPECT of it. My reason for this is because I’ve been a believer for a long time now, through my writing, that such creative aspect is important and essential to our writing, as we exercise learning.
One influencer on my perception on writing today, when it comes to writing creatively, is perhaps a famous writer and teacher who goes by the name of Lee Gutkind. I still remember that day few years back when I came across one of his interview presentations, in where he said a powerful sentence that stayed with me until now: “If you want people to learn anything, you do it through story… people remember facts when told to them in a story-like manner” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiAGXqpaTuw). At such moment, I found that his message was the perfect definition of my preferred type of writing, which has always been creative writing. Ever since, I’ve been even more interested in writing creatively and not just plainly. And I have exercised it at school, work, and even on my personal tasks. But ultimately, it is because I have a strong desire for it that I want my thesis project to represent my interest and what I’ve focused to be my own personal growth in the program.
